You may have seen Cupping before – especially with it’s trade mark, visible circular red marks that are left on the skin after treatment. But what does it actually do?….
Myofascial Cupping is the application of plastic vacuum cups on the soft tissues. The cup literally picks up the tissue underneath it, by way of suction, allowing a change and release in the fascia (connective tissue) to take place. The lifting of the tissues allows a rush of fresh blood, nutrients, oxygen and heat to the area, aiding recovery.
Myofascial Cupping can be particularly beneficial for areas of chronic tightness, where massage alone has been unable to make much of a difference.
Often the cups are left in place for 5-10 minutes, but they can also be moved around on the skin, and for even better results – used in conjunction with active and passive stretching movements of the muscles.
I do not offer Myofascial Cupping as a stand-alone treatment, but I use them as and when I feel the need during a session. If you would like me to use them during your Soft Tissue Massage, just let me know!
Please be aware, cupping will leave red marks on your skin for up to a week post treatment. It is not painful at all, but can look unsightly and may alarm other people!
